I worked with Lauren on her digital portfolio when she applied to art college during her final year on HND.
Here’s a selection of her work from the past few years including some that went into her admissions portfolio for Grays School of Art.
About Lauren Fowlds:
Hi, I’m Lauren and I’m a queer designer from Edinburgh.
I’m currently studying Communication Design at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen.
I am a lover of typography and enjoy using many different mediums to create work such as photography, print and painting to name a few.
My biggest inspirations are Keith Haring, Morag Myerscough and Tara Booth. I’m also heavily influenced by film, camp culture and 70s aesthetics.
Lauren’s advice:
Applying to art school can feel like the most daunting thing in the world, trust me – I’ve been there.
It took me three attempts to get a place but I’m so grateful for how things turned out, I couldn’t imagine doing any other course.
You can really begin to doubt yourself and your abilities when applying for art school but you need to remember how talented you are and keep your goals in mind.
One of the most important things I learnt when creating my portfolio is that art schools want originality.
Your personality needs to shine through in your folio if it’s going to stand out against the rest.
Something that I wish I’d done earlier is get other’s opinions on my folio, it can be difficult to pick which pieces of your work to showcase and getting advice from a professional with experience in the art world can make all the difference.
One piece of advice – don’t give up. You’ve got this.
